Poll: Can Melbourne Still Make the Finals?

December 5th, 2007 by Eric · 8 Comments

Are the Melbourne Victory’s final aspirations dead?

I tuned in to SEN 1116 after the game on Sunday and became gradually more depressed as the commentators stated, quite matter of factly, that the Victory are out of the A-League finals.

Out. With six games to go.

Melbourne are six points outside the top four, but it’s statistically quite possible to reach the top four.

Opposition coaches are less keen to make premature judgments. In the words of Aurelio Vidmar:

You’d be foolish to write them off. They certainly can still make the top four and once they are in the finals anything can happen. They have far too much quality to be written off.

Over to you: Can Melbourne still make the finals?

We can make it!! providing we win the next two home games starting with Adelaide this week and i think Newcastle or Central Coast the week later as both are already in the top 4. Lose one of these and the chances of making top 4 decreases by 50 per cent loose both and it will be impossable.

    Thanks Shannon

i would rather get everything right on the field and then look forward to champions league, as i think the finals are going to be a waste, but as coaches say dont write them off..

It is still possible but definitely hinges on winning the next two games at home, if this were to happen, a bit of confidence could then be taken into the next two away matches, though I think getting to and winning the Grand Final would need a massive turnaround in form at the moment. Tend to agree with Chris that changes that need to be made might come too late for the finals, so a focus on doing well in the ACL and seeing this as a transition year might be more realistic.

Melbourne don’t know where the ball even is this season. I have been a member for 3 seasons. sack the couch he’s done nothing. we play like crap. crowds droping. very boring football. melbourne till i die! but they need to pull there socks up otherwise the crowd violence will continue.

Hey Tom, I think it’s a bit unfair to attribute crowd violence to poor results. There was crowd violence last year when we were winning every game. I was in Adelaide when Melbourne won 3 - 1, and two Victory fans got in a fight with each other.

I sincerely doubt that what goes on on the field is what leads to crowd violence. I think it has more to do with the mindset of certain fans - who see the game as a place where violence is acceptable. And that’s an attitude that has to go.

    True Eric,

It’s time we ban these pubeless vinnie jones wanna-be’s and send them back to the shopping centre carparks that they all come from.

I would love to see Victory make it, however if they played like they played last week, kiss the season goodbye. I do deep down, think that we have turned the corner and things are starting to change, however the refs do tend to favour the stronger teams in terms of 50-50 decisions and Adelaide are a dirty team when they want to be- dont ruke them out about trying to get our players carded. Right now, its one week at a time.
