Victory signs Nick Ward

December 5th, 2007 by Eric · 5 Comments

The Melbourne Victory signed Nick Ward today, a 22-year old Olyroo who has been playing in England for the Queens Park Rangers. Some of you may remember him from the inaugural A-League season, when he played for the Perth Glory.

Ward is a midfielder, and an attacking one at that. Sounds like just what Melbourne needs to reinvigorate a tired, overly defensive midfield.

He joins Melbourne on a six-month contract - enough to see out the rest of this A-League season and the group stage of the AFC Champions League.

Perhaps the bright spark Melbourne needs to kick into gear?

Have to admit I haven’t seen much of him, but sounds exactly like the right kind of player we’ve all been waiting for in terms of style and it’ll be interesting to see what the team selection will be against Adelaide on Saturday, I hope he’s eligible/fit enough, can’t wait to see him play!

According to the Age, he won’t be ready yet for this Saturday’s match, unfortunately… Spewing!

He was good for Perth, sounds like he may have gone to the UK a bit too early. Its a good thing we signed him….I just hope it’s not Hernandez who has to make way. I think Carlos has set up Archie and Danny many times this year with beautiful through balls but Archie in particular keeps missing. If Archie had scored half of those shots then we would be praising Hernandez as better than friend. Some of his long passing has been awesome. Granted he doesn’t have the engine to carry the ball but hopefully that’s where Ward can help. Broxham or Brebner has to make way depending on what Merrick decides. It is a welcome selection headache though… I think Carlos will fire up against Adelaide as he will feel he is going to be replaced by Ward….watch this space.

Totally agree Astri - for me Hernandez is not the problem. I think Brebner would be the more likely one to make way. He just hasn’t had the form he did last season. Though Caceres is also less likely to get a starting spot with this addition.

I doubt Broxham will get the axe though. He’s one of the more lively players on the field and that tends to be something we sorely lack overall.

i think broxham will face the axe if Ward does fit straight in… does any one know how fit he is since his limited game time for QPR or Brighton? it could be two weeks atleast before we see anything positive.

Personally im sure people can see how i feel about broxham being on the field so i would rather have brebner being there and maybe sub for broxham or love later in the game
