Have you voted in the A-League Awards yet? Voting closes next Thursday, January 31.
Who was the best Melbourne Victory player this season?
We’ve had so much fun running the A-League Awards that we decided to follow it up with a Melbourne Victory Awards.
But we need your help. Most of the categories are fairly straightforward, but there’s one that we need help deciding on: the Best MVFC Player of 2007/08. We need to whittle a handful of nominees out of the 23 possibilities – and we’d like your help deciding which players should be nominated.
To nominate players, all you have to do is leave a comment after this post listing the players you think deserve to be nominated. List as many as you’d like, but make sure your list is ranked.
Here’s my picks to get the ball rolling:
- Rodrigo Vargas
- Michael Theoklitos
- Archie Thompson
- Carlos Hernández
- Daniel Vasilevski
Over to you: Who were the best Melbourne Victory players this season?

well most improved this season would have to be Daniel Vasilevski, most consistant throughout the whole season would have 2 be Michael Theoklitos,Rodrigo Vargas and Archie Thompson. Carlos Hernández started to come good to late in the season
Theo without a doubt
Thanks guys. By the way, hope I wasn’t unclear… but you can pick players I didn’t pick.
Although I’m willing to accept that my choices were perfect:)
Theo
Vargas
and I think Nick Ward though don’t know if he counts since he wasn’t there for the whole season
The best
1. Rodrigo Vargas (a staunch defender with the best head in the game – deserving of Socceroos selection
2. Adrian Caceres (when Ernie decides he can get some playing time)
3. Michael Theoklitos (unflappable stopper)
4. Daniel Vasilevski (turned defence into attack – should have been signed at the start of the season)
5. Carlos Hernandez (found form after Christmas – inventive player with precise passing and good batt at foot skills – very unselfish)
The Shockers
1. Matthew Kemp (never lived up to his Adelaide form – poor passing and bad decision making)
2. Kevin Muscat (I know this will have many of you howling, but he is the captain and should lead by example – too many red and yellow cards and didn’t lead well).
3. Danny Allsop (another controversial one – but he is a confidence player and squandered too many chances in front of goal).
4. Joe Keenan (another with a heap of talent but never showed ot on the pitch)
5. Ljubo Milicevic (I know injuries played a part, but not a sucessful signing)
6. Ernie Merrick (insidsted on starting Kemp and persisted with him all season despite his poor playing, reluctant to start Caceras and subbed him off too often)
Theo………………………..daylight,
Vargas.
Carlos Hernandez
Theo and Vargas by far. To play devils advocate though, when Kemp was moved back into a defence position he played “ok” but Ernie kept playing him in midfield where he was less than average. For the last 6 rounds, Hernandez. But outright for me is Vargas. He saved us more in front of goal than theo.
Archie without a doubt. He may not be scoring as often as A-league version 2 but can you blame him? he’s been practically a mid fielder this whole year going into territory that should have been more strongly controlled by the likes of brebner, broxham, hernandez etc.
his work rate in the middle was enourmous, which i believe made him a little sloppy once he managed to get into an attacking position, too tired/ran out of legs
Our midfield was just too weak this season.
1. adrian caceres – gives the team the width they have now found, once given his chance has cemented his spot in the starting line up.
2. theo – the biggest savior for melbourne this year, we would have finished much worse had it not been for his fine efforts early in the season.
3. vargas – without a doubt the best defender in teh league, melbournes back line would be lost without him.
4. muscat – if u want that supurb passing u have to take the cards with it, gives the team the attitude they need to win and is sorely missed when not on the park, a true leader.
5. archie – the only consistant player in front of goals this year, sometimes tries to do to much but at lest he’s in there giving it his all.
thats my opinion anyway, i think kaz could definately been here had ernie not waster his year, poor kid:(
Vargas, Theo , Archie
Thanks for the negatives Phil, they weren’t part of the question.
1. Theo
2. Caceras
3. Vargas
4. Ryall
In a disappointing year there was some light at the end of the tunnel leading into the Asian Championships. The 2 players that busted their guts week in, week out:
1. Archie Thompson
2. Roddy Vargas
Common Victory for the Asian Championships and here’s to a stronger 2008/09 season. Go Victory!
1. Vargas
2. Carlos Hernandez
Vargas
Best
3 votes: Archie
2 votes: Theo
1 vote: Roddy
Worst (I’m including cos like Phil I think the flipside should get a run also)
3 votes: Kemp
2 votes: Ljubo
1 vote: Keenan/Love
Special mention to the board & Ernie for their crap recruiting, inability to modify our game plan until it was too late and for not giving Kaz the game time he should’ve got!
Lets hope we can learn from this and set the wheels in motion on all fronts to kill it in the Champions League!
For me, by far the best players were Vargas (didn’t play a game wrong- and when he did get red carded it was for a weak, weak challenge) and Theoklitos (by far the best keeper going around and what was Pim Verbeek thinking by not calling him up as part of the Socceroos squad). Honerable mentions go to Caseres (when he did get to play!!) and Hernandez (was slow to adapt but if the form he showed at the end of the season was anything to go by, then we will be in for a hell of Champions league and bring on Season 4!)
1. Vargas (best defender in the league)
2. Caceres (should have been in the starting lineup from the START of the season. He creates scoring opportunities constantly, more than any other player)
3. Theo (ever reliable)
4. Thompson (always trying and still our best striker)
I think Hernandez was the best player only because he brought the most excitement to a poor season. He will explode in the open spaces of the champions league. Theo and Vargas for their consistency. Ljubo gets the dunce award for proving to be the cancer the club didn’t need.
Archie – always out there working hard
Caceres ( should have been started more in the season)
Vargas
Theo
Vargas,Theo, Carlos and Archie. They were our best.
The rest were a mixed bag , mainly due to selection mysteries. Pantalidis never lets us down yet dropped off the radar, Kaz just can’t get a run, and Caceras should always play on the left so Allsopp has a chance of some service. Ward looks good, and Muscat is always good value. Ernie seemed to change our attacking set up towards the end of the season with Caceras left and Archie right with Carlos in support of Allsopp and it worked. The overseas players , Carlos excepted, were dissapointing and big Ljubo ……. lets hope he sorts himself out because he is some footballer, make no mistake.
