Adrian Caceres moving to Mariners

February 7th, 2008 by Eric · 14 Comments

MVFC Awards close tomorrow. Vote now if you haven’t already.

After weeks of speculation and rumours, it’s been confirmed: Adrian Caceres has left Melbourne for the greener grasses of Gosford.

The Central Coast Mariners have added the attacking midfielder to their squad list for next year. Caceres will, however, be available for the group stage of the Asian Champions League.

I’m sad to see him go. Caceres is a player with flair and creativity; a player who proved to be instrumental in the Victory’s late resurgence this season; and a player who deserved more game time than he was given. No doubt many fans will blame Caceres’ move on Ernie Merrick’s refusal to play him more, especially in the early stages of this season.

this is a hard one to digest…

caceras was a good player who did not get enough game time and was regularly played out of position…

    but

maybe this means we are trying to keep Patafta or change the structure of our team…

who knows but im sad to see him go

I think this is not a good move from a Melbourne fan point of view.

Caceres was a good option for Victory even when coming off the bench because he offered something different.

I think the A-League needs to increase the number of matches per season. This will in the end get players to play more games per season and let coaches not be too cautious like it is at the moment.

With a cautious approach Merrick wouldn’t have played Caceres esp. early on in the season.

Well that settles it. The Mariners are going to flog in the minor premiership in 2009.

He will be missed but I don’t think he is irreplaceable. It was his choice to move and I for one think Merrick used him enough. I got the impression that he was a bit of a lone ranger playing for himself at times and sulking when being subbed is not good for any player. Although he is a fan favourite I think he was expendable. Hopefully he performs in the ACL when picked.

He’s going to be a bastard to replace, lack of good local wingers and that’s all we can get right now to replace him. Terrible move.

did Berger not shine during the practice match against the socceroos?

maybe Berger is the ready made replacement

I think we’ll regret it but as i understand, it was his choice and ccm probably offered him more of $$$$ or a promise he’ll be a standard

so if the mariners can see hes worth $$$ and a starting spot why the hell cant merrick!

  • 13 andy // Feb 12, 2008 at 9:01 pm

He’s gone due to lack of game time…… we were always more balanced in attack when he played….. he’ll be missed…..lets hope Berger can step up or maybe Kaz might get more of a run out left

  • 14 Campbell // Feb 13, 2008 at 12:55 pm

We can’t hope Berger can step up… He HAS to, we have NO wide players except him and Vasilevski for the ACL.

    Unless you like the 4-6-0
