So there’s a new Melbourne Victory outfit for the AFC Champions League, and it’s done away with the ‘V’. An ominous gesture if you’re into symbolism. But then, that ‘V’ has been a rather impotent symbol through the years.
To make up for the loss of the ‘V’, a gold strip has been brought in, designed to “symbolise the prestige of the competition.”

Eric, I havent read the official line from the club, but given that the ‘big v’ is synonomous with Australian sport, i wonder if it was irrelevant to use it in asia?
have they said anything about reverting back to the V next season or will this strip also be used then?
ultmately, it’s all about selling more shirts i sense.

The only thing I’ve heard regarding why they dropped the ‘V’ is that the ACL requires teams to display team player numbers on both the front and back of jersey - as opposed to the A-League, where shirts are only on the back. So my guess is that they will also return to the V next season, leaving this as a specific “ACL” shirt.
Which is indeed a great way to sell more shirts! From memory, this would be the third shirt they’ve produced since inception.

It’s a good momento, the shirt from our first ACL trophy
