Poll: Is Danny Vukovic’ 15 month ban too harsh?

February 27th, 2008 by Eric · 5 Comments

Danny Vukovic’ last minute slap of the referee’s hand has inspired a rather hefty debate among A-League bloggers. The goalkeeper was handed a 15 month ban, 6 months of which is suspended.

Football in the Capital called Vukovic a “knob” for his actions; meanwhile, The Football Tragic and A Seat at the A-League both remind readers that the Newcastle Jets’ Joel Griffiths infamously punched a referee in the groin. Yet Griffiths was only handed a yellow card.

So now over to you: Is Danny Vukovic’ 15 month ban too harsh? Or is it not harsh enough?

i said in an early comment for life, sorry danny i, just as u did, acted in the heat of the moment.

its not really 15 months, it’ll end up being like 9, and he’ll get to play in the olympics for sure, so its a perfect penalty for me, yes joel should have copped the same kind of thing, but now maybe its opened the ffa’s eyes that they need to start cracking down on this shit, swearing at the refs, constant abusive arguing etc etc.

and it shows everyone that we take our players actions, seriously, ben cousins got 12 months, and he dragged his league and team through months of drug abuse for the whole world to see, and player liek that is up for a life ban for sure.

Personally I think it won’t matter unless he can train and play in pre-season practice matches like he should be able too.

Otherwise a career has been ruined, I think it’s a little inconsistent, thus harsh (Di Canio basically only got a year for pushing over a ref as well).

Well he was a knob. Fair is fair, Aloisi lost his rag as well.
If there were any consistency there’d be a public flogging for Joel Griffiths for his peculiar approach to “attacking the ball”, or even better, just for being an arse. Point is you can’t have players striking referees at any level; it filters down.

It’s probably fair. Sad as I am to see him out of the game for a season, it will send the right message.

Griffiths obviously should have received more penalty than he did. That was really a very poor decision on the day though by Breeze (?) - I mean really, what referee in their right mind gives a player a yellow card for striking a referee!! I think even if the FFA can’t do anything to Griffiths, they should request some sort of voluntary penalty from him, so he can clear his own name. I don’t know, like community service or something like that.

They should stick Griffiths on a busy intersection with sandwich board on his neck saying “I’m a Cock!”
