Victory Awards: Vargas and Thompson share Victory Medal

Archie Thompson and Rodrigo Vargas were announced as co-winners of the Victory Medal last night.

Kevin Muscat and Michael Theoklitos were joint runners-up, with Carlos Hernández trailing a point behind.

Both Thompson and Vargas picked up other awards as well, with Thompson receiving the SEN Player of the Year award and Vargas voted Players’ Player of the Year. Leigh Broxham also won multiple awards, scoring both the Clubman of the Year and the Age Young Player of the Year awards.

None of the results particularly surprise me, even though they are quite different from the Fans’ Choice Melbourne Victory Awards we hosted on MVFC Blog a month ago. Fans picked Michael Theoklitos for Best Player and Sebastian Ryall for Best Young Player (Leigh Broxham was a very distant third in that contest).

What do you think of the results of the Victory Awards?

it only shows that the awards are biassed, thats one of the key reasons fred left last year from what i heard. although all or most players were deserving of what they won there were others that should have got a look in and by camparing resaults you can see that clear as day.

Theo a bit stiff. Even though Archie tried, he simply didn’t score enough goals to win the award, and yes he did have plenty of opportunities. Roddy deserved his medal.

Theo definitely unlucky. Vargas I think should of won it last year and Thompson was very lucky to get where he did with his goal talley – lots of effort but I didn’t think he pulled in that last few inches to be our best (our equal best) player.

Thoroughly deserved win for both players. Vargas, without question was our best defender all season and a great leader. Thompson, I think also was a deserved winner. Week in, week out he put in tireless performances trying to lift those around him. It was a pity that for most of the season he didn’t get the support he required. Theoklitos can probably count himself unlucky as he kept us in many a game and also lead well. Its a conspiracy against goalkeepers, they never win anything, believe me I can speak from experience.

The award for Broxham was a bit of a surprise considering the form of Ryall when he played. Broxham was too inconsistent for my liking and too quick to dive in with the tackle. Ryall was outstanding in all games he played and stamped himself on the starting XI. Should have won it by a mile.
