This news came out before the weekend, but I never got time to post about it. Nick Ward has been named as Melbourne Victory’s Youth Marquee.
Under the youth marquee system, every A-League club is allowed to pay one local player under the age of 24 up to $150,000 outside the salary cap. 23-year old Ward, who came to Melbourne on a six-month contract back in December, extended his contract to run till the end of April 2009.

Let’s hope he gets over his niggling injuries and justifies his ‘marquee’ status.
Other than his third game of the regular season against Wellington when he teamed up well with Carlos I dont think Nick has played particularly well at all. His passing has been surprisingly poor, he turns over the ball too often and he hasnt been creative in midfield despite occassionally doing a lot of running. I think some of this is injury related and also due to the fact that his role has been changed a few times in recent matches.
The fact that he has signed for the next season is a good thing though as overall he can be a positive contributor to the squad.
Roll on V4 …
