The Melbourne Victory announced last Friday that it has buoyed its defensive stocks by signing Michael Thwaite. The Socceroo joins Melbourne on a one-year loan from his Norwegian club, SK Brann.
Gary Cole, on Thwaite’s signing:
“It’s very pleasing to be able to bring another Socceroo home, albeit for only a short time at this stage.”
“He’s big, quick and will do a great job for us in defence.”
Meanwhile, mystery still surrounds whether Costa Rican defensive midfielder José Luis López has signed with Melbourne. The Costa Rican press seems quite certain of the deal, but the club hasn’t made an announcement yet.

Seems like a decent signing, the defence certainly needs strengthening with all the goals that were shipped in the ACL. Now just need a decent winger (and a manager that actually plays with wide men) and we’ll be right.
In all seriousnous though I reckon things are looking good for the coming season. I can’t wait. Bring on Sydney.

Should be a good addition to the defence but do we need “one-year deals”. How can you build for the future … if he is great we may do really well and then his contract is up and he leaves again and we have a hole the following year.
We are possibly a winger short up front but I’d play Archie out wide next year running at defenders with Danny and Fabiano in the centre.
With a little bit of adventure when we go forward (and not trying to walk it through the middle of the park) we could have a good year.
Roll on …

Perhaps they dont want to pay out Joe Keenan as he has 1 year left on his 2 year contract, and that is the reason they are stalling on the announcment.

From Wikipedia on José Luis López
Reports indicate that he will be moving to Australian club Melbourne Victory in June 2008, and reports have been confirmed in the Costa Rican media that he will join the club. Rumours are now circulating that the only thing stopping Lopez’s tranfer from going through is his Visa application, and that once it comes through, he will put pen to paper officially on a deal with the Victory.
Keenan may be off to Scotland.
