Pre-Season Cup starts today

July 14th, 2007 by Eric · No Comments

The Pre-Season Cup kicks off today with 3 matches to be played:

  • Newcastle Jets vs Perth Glory, 2:30 pm, Port Macquarie Regional Stadium
  • Central Coast Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix, 6:00 pm, Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford
  • Queensland Roar vs Sydney FC, 7:00 pm, Maroochydore SC, Sunshine Coast

Melbourne meets Adelaide tomorrow in Launceston (see the details here).

The points system is a little odd. In addition to the regular points, teams score bonus points based on how many goals they score. Any team that scores 2 goals gets an extra point, whoever scores 3 gets 2 bonus points and if any team manages more than 4 goals, they’ll get 3 points added to their tally.

Seems odd, but it’s a smart way to encourage teams to score as much as possible. Besides being an excellent way for teams to kick back into gear before the regular A-League season starts, the Pre-Season Cup also offers the FFA the chance to bring games to parts of the country that don’t have their own national team. What better way to get prospective fans excited about football than to give them a goal fest?
