For 25 year old Daniel Vasilevski, his recent signing with the Melbourne Victory promises to grant him a 2nd chance of making an impression on the A-League.
His 1st opportunity came in the inaugural season, when the Perth Glory added the young attacker/midfielder to their roster. But injury plagued his time with the Glory, and poor Vasilevski didn’t make a single appearance during his time with the team. Left without a contract after Perth dropped him at the end of the season, he returned to Victoria and played with the Altona Magic.
But it seems Ernie Merrick and Gary Cole had bigger plans for him.
Fans who were at the Melbourne vs. Newcastle match in Geelong a month ago will already have seen a bit of Vasilevski. Wearing the number 25 jersey, he came on in the 2nd half and had one decent crack at goal. Obviously impressed by his performance both on and off the pitch, it didn’t take long for the club to snatch him up.
If the Melbourne Victory website is anything to go by (and chances are it is not…), Vasilevski has been placed in the role of attacking midfielder – a position also held by Carlos Hernández and Kaz Patafta. Pitted against two favoured players, it’s clear that game time won’t come easy for Vasilevski. One thing he has in his advantage is his versatility: he could very easily slot into a right midfield role, should Merrick need him there. But once again, he has some popular competition to deal with.
From everything I’ve read about him, Vasilevski is a very promising talent – and one who’s had national experience playing for the Under 20s and 23s. While I doubt he’s going to make it into the first 11, he definitely has the potential to become an off-the-bench attacking option in Merrick’s arsenal.
