Sydney FC managed their first win of the season on the weekend. And apparently, if the official A-League website is anything to go by, they did it with 10 men!
For a poor punter like me who doesn’t have Foxtel, the good ol’ A-League website is pretty much it in terms of coverage (since radio coverage is hard to come by for many games). But really, the FFA are really letting us down this season. Anyone else noticed the site is down all too often when a game is on?

This season it seems to be a problem, last year I followed the away matches with a combination of the web and radio, this year I got fox just to watch the away games, but I noticed right from the beginning of the season that the A-League/MVFC sites were always throwing server is too busy errors. All the club sites are probably centrally hosted so it must be just the volume of traffic this season compared to last. Time to upgrade their servers?

I also have had problems with the site even when there was no match being played. I think the problem lies with the content management system they use because there seems to be too many database calls and hence timeouts but it could be something else.
I would expect an organisation like the FFA to have a better site than that in terms of scalability and performance. Lets hope they fix this problem before long.

Yep, the A-League site, and parts of the FFA site at times, has been impossible. Certainly their server space is inadequate, but I’ve noticed a lot of silly typos as well, an indication that things aren’t being as well maintained as before.
It’s hard to know who to blame. It could be down to one individual who might need another job soon. Or as Wes suggested perhaps they’ve been surprised with much more traffic this year, which can of course easily be fixed.
But as David indicated, for many the A-League site is about the only way to follow things, so it needs to be fixed, very quickly.
Thanks for bringing this subject up Neil. Have been contemplating bringing it up in a blog myself.

Sorry about the identity error. Neil is of course over at Victory in Melbourne. I’m getting my bloggers mixed up. Peter?

No worries Hamish:) It’s Eric - Peter’s the other bloke behind the blog, but I take the credits for this post:)
Frankly, the FFA could do a lot more with the A-League site. For example, what if they streamed online radio from the various stations that actually cover games (or at least provided much better, obvious links to them)? Or, even better, they could produce their own radio show and commentate themselves. There have been calls already for the need for games to be broadcast across the nation. Given the surge in people’s use of the internet, perhaps a good online broadcast of every game will suffice.
